What I do hope to see here is some exploration of race and authoritarianism in America, topics that the MCU has avoided, but now they seem frankly…unavoidable.
The comics go into some extremely weird places in this storyline so I don’t know if they’re particularly instructive with what happens next here (Red Skull in a cloned Steve Rogers body!). In short, he’s not “full Homelander” but we will clearly see a harder-edged version of Captain America with Walker, though whether they do make him a true villain, or someone who realizes the err of their ways and comes back from the brink remains to be seen.
He actually tries to embody Steve Rogers’ ethics, but he’s just a more brutal all-around character, and eventually he beats a villain to death and badly injures a group of mutants.
